Is Your Gas Fireplace Ready for Winter? A Northeast Ohio Checklist

Every fall in Northeast Ohio, we get the same calls. A homeowner turns on their gas fireplace for the first time since March — and nothing happens. Or worse, it lights but smells off, or the flame looks wrong. Nine times out of ten, a simple pre-season tune-up would have caught it.

If you want to avoid being that call, run through this checklist before the cold arrives.

1. Check the Pilot Light

If your fireplace has a standing pilot, it should be burning a small, steady blue flame year-round. If it's out, try relighting it following your manufacturer's instructions. If it won't stay lit, that's a thermocouple issue — a common and inexpensive repair, but one that needs a certified tech.

2. Inspect the Burner Flames

Turn on your fireplace and watch the flames for 60 seconds. Healthy gas flames are mostly blue with orange tips. If you see:

  • All-yellow or orange flames — incomplete combustion, possible carbon monoxide risk
  • Uneven flames — dirty or clogged burner ports
  • Flickering or pulsing — gas pressure issue or debris in the line

Any of these warrant a professional inspection before you use the fireplace regularly.

3. Look at the Glass

Cloudy, hazy, or soot-stained glass isn't just cosmetic — it's a sign the fireplace isn't burning cleanly. A thorough cleaning and a check of the door gaskets will restore clarity and efficiency.

4. Test the Blower (If You Have One)

Turn on the blower and listen. It should run quietly and push warm air into the room. Grinding, rattling, or no airflow at all means the motor or fan needs attention.

5. Check the Venting

For direct-vent fireplaces, go outside and look at the vent termination cap. Make sure it's clear of debris, bird nests, or damage from last winter. A blocked vent is a carbon monoxide hazard.

6. Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detector

This one isn't fireplace-specific, but it matters. If your CO detector is more than 5–7 years old, replace it. If it's battery-powered, swap the batteries now.

7. Test the Remote or Wall Switch

If your fireplace has a remote or wall switch, test it before you need it on a cold night. Weak batteries and corroded contacts are the most common culprits when a remote stops working.

8. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Even if everything looks fine, an annual inspection by a certified technician catches things you can't see — gas pressure readings, heat exchanger condition, internal component wear. It's the difference between a fireplace that works all winter and one that fails when you need it most.
